A heritage of cycling excellence
In 1975, cyclist Ian Hendry affectionately known as ‘Wheels’–took a leap of faith and opened a humble bike shop in Ocean Grove. It became an integral part of the community, with Ian championing and popularising the sport of cycling in the region.
Ian was widely regarded as an inspiring figure for a number of budding cyclists in the Bellarine area, and often looked to for gear advice and cycling needs.
Ian passed the bidon to a former employee, Stephen Draper, in 1993, who further grew the community across two stores and established it as a cornerstone of the local cycling community. With a rich heritage spanning nearly five decades, HENDRY’S is a testament to the enduring spirit of cycling, consistently inviting riders of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy the ride.
Ian Hendry Cycle and Sports stocked everything you could wish for. From bikes to tennis racquets, inflatable surf mats, fishing licences and stackhats, Ian provided the community with a wide array of sporting goods, while generously sharing his passion for cycling and service to many a customer.
With a deep respect for the sport and an infectious enthusiasm for helping all discover their love of cycling, Simon brings a wealth of experience to our local institution.
Throughout his 15-year professional cycling career, Simon has achieved remarkable victories, including wins at Milan-San Remo in 2012 and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2014. He has also won the Australian National Road Championships twice, in 2012 and 2014. Additionally, Simon boasts stage victories in all three Grand Tours: the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia, and the Vuelta a España. His career is further distinguished by multiple overall victories at the Tour Down Under and the Herald Sun Tour.
Simon has also dedicated his time to developing cycling charities and grassroots programs. His vision for this next page of history seamlessly aligns with the values that have defined HENDRY’S for generations. Simon is committed to supporting cyclists of all levels, stoking their passions, and ensuring their two-wheeled adventures are as fulfilling as they are memorable.
