Introducing Andrew

I’m one of four boys, and after moving around a few times during my childhood we eventually settled in Sydney. That tendency to move has continued throughout my life and I’m now living in my 17th home.

I began my professional career with a metallurgical services company before spending 25 years with an industrial gases company. Eventually I decided it was time for a change and to simplify life a little. That journey ultimately brought me to the Bellarine Peninsula and fortunately to Hendry’s.

I’m thoroughly enjoying this new chapter. Working in a bike shop means I get to do what I enjoy every day - talking bikes, working with bikes and of course riding bikes!

How did you get into cycling?
Cycling was a big part of my early teenage years. It was how I got around and more importantly how I connected with my mates. Then I got my first car and the bikes understandably took a bit of a back seat!

It wasn’t until I was living and working in New Zealand that a couple of friends and I decided to give triathlon a go. I completed my first triathlon on a rigid-frame mountain bike - not exactly the ideal setup but it got the job done!

After that I bought my first road bike and things started to become a little more serious.
When I relocated to Melbourne in 2006 I joined the local triathlon club as a way of meeting people and settling into the area. Cycling quickly became a regular part of my week and it has remained a big part of my life ever since.

Favourite bike?
I’ve owned quite a few bikes over the years and currently have five in the stable, so choosing a favourite isn’t easy. If I had to pick just one, it would be my Trek Madone SL 7 Gen 8.

Favourite ride?
This one is difficult because the weather and more importantly the company can make almost any ride a great one.

I used to regularly ride a loop on the Mornington Peninsula known as the “Sat Spesh.” It was a great 70+ km route with around 750 metres of elevation, heading down the peninsula before returning through some of the surrounding hills.

For organised events, the Granite Classic out of Beechworth is a favourite. It’s a fantastic, social event and one I enjoy turning into a full weekend of riding. I’ll ride the Granite Classic on Saturday, then back it up on Sunday with the Indigo MTB Trail out to Yackandandah and back.

Favourite coffee?
This one’s easy .. a Magic!
