Born in Timboom, I spent most of my life in Colac. As a father of five and a grandfather of three and a half, my family is my pride and joy. I've had a diverse career as a Painter and Decorator, served as an Army Engineer, and worked as a trade school teacher at both the Gordon and Bendigo TAFES.
Throughout my life, I've faced a couple of life changing incidents, but cycling has always been my constant source of motivation. I've been racing since I was 12, competing in both track and road events, with a particular passion for track racing. Over the years, I've celebrated victories in various Wheel Races across the Western Districts and Northcote Velodrome. I had the honour of representing Victoria in track racing and even raced in Malaysia.
Coming up in the '80s, the golden era of track racing in Australia, I had the opportunity to compete alongside notable names like Shane Kelly, Dean Woods, Garry Neiwand, Max Rainsford, and Martin Vinnicombe. I've held multiple office roles at the Colac Cycling Club and am proud to be a life member.
For more than 11 years, I owned and operated Bike Guru in Colac, supporting local riders and introducing many of them to the world of racing. After closing the business due to COVID, I moved to Torquay, and soon joined Hendry's, heading up the Ocean Grove workshop. Over the past five years, I’ve enjoyed getting to know the local cycling community and always look forward to joining my teammates for our weekly track races.
How did you get into cycling?
My grandad, Harry, who rode with Russell Mockridge, surprised me with a bike when I was 12 years old. I embraced it and have been riding ever since.
Favourite bike?
My Cecil Walker track bike, which I used to win the Ararat Wheel Race and compete in the National titles, holds a special place in my heart (though I regret selling it!). I still have my original McDonald road frame hanging in the shed, which I saved up for by delivering medications to the local community.
Riding type?
Track, of course!
Favourite ride?
The old Northcote Velodrome, along with a special fondness for the Ararat Track, where I achieved some big wins against tough competitors.
Favourite coffee?
I prefer my English Breakfast tea with a dash of milk and one sugar! Don’t tell my Doc!
