Exceptional people excel at building relationships, delivering value, and putting the customer first. Let’s introduce you to Mark. Mark become a vital part of our Ocean Grove stores’ DNA. He has helped countless customers on their journeys to purchase their first or even a fourth bike!
Hailing from South Africa, Mark began his career selling cameras and capturing photographs throughout the country. In 1981, he immigrated to Australia, where he continued in the industry until a customer invited him to manage his HiFi store. A transition into the car industry further honed his skills during a remarkable 32-year tenure at a Holden dealership. A nod of recognition from the then-owner, Steven Draper of Hendry’s, marked the start of a new chapter for Mark to combine his passion for cycling and joined the Team at Ocean Grove.
How did you get into cycling? I used to commute 50km to school every day in South Africa, which sparked my passion for the bike. After taking a break from riding to settle into my new home country, I was soon introduced to mountain biking by a colleague, and quickly became hooked. I joined the Geelong Mountain Bike Club in 1991 and instantly fell in love with the community. Shortly after, I became the President and held that role for over 20 years. When I stepped down, I sought out a new challenge and got involved in multi-sport racing. In 2010, I was invited to serve as Race Director for the Tour De Timor, leading four tours in 2011, 2012, 2017, and 2018.
Favourite bike? That’s a difficult question! I’ve had too many to pick a favourite – but if I had to choose, it would be my Trek Fuel EX-e 9.7 mountain bike and my Serotta HSG carbon road bike.
Riding type? Mountain biking and road riding.
Favourite Ride? Ridden too many trails so it’s hard to choose one!
Favourite coffee? Latte.
